Workshops

EMACT annouces a series of free summer workshops on theatre history and practice in the 20th century.  "Paving the Road to Realism in the Art of Theatre and Drama" will cover the European and American playwrights, technical advances, and performance methods of the Realistic movement.  The workshops are presented by the Theatre Company of Saugus, now celebrating its 40th anniversary as the community theatre group of Saugus, Mass. and surrounding communities.  All EMACT members and everyone involved in community theatre is invited to attend.

There will be five sessions, on Tuesday evenings starting at 7:30 PM, on July 15, 22, 29, and August 5, 12.  The location is the Cliftondale Congregational Church, at 50 Essex Street (near the corner of Lincoln Avenue), in Saugus, Massachusetts.

You may attend as many or as few sessions as you like.  The subjects planned for each session are as follows:

1.  July 15:  Scientific, philosophical and cultural movements that influenced the development of Realism in drama and theatre.

2.  July 22:  The Realistic Movement in England and Europe, discussing the works of the playwrights Henrik Ibsen, Anton Chekhov, August Strindberg, G.B. Shaw, Gerhart Hauptmann and Maxim Gorky.

3.  July 29:  The Realistic Movement in America, discussing the works of the playwrights Eugene O'Neill, David Belasco, Maxwell Anderson, Elmer Rice, Robert Sherwood, Lillian Hellman, Arthur Miller, and Tennessee Williams.

4.  August 5:  The Creation of the Realistic Theatrical Environment, with emphasis on set design, costumes, and theatre architecture.

5:  August 12:  Performing the Realistic Drama, with emphasis on the actor and director.

The main presenter and coordinator of the workshops is the theatre historian Professor Emeritus Leo Nickole, former head of the Department of Theatre at Emerson College.  The presenter of the design session on August 5 is Luke J. Sutherland, resident Technical Director and Designer at the Community College of Rhode Island.  Selected other authorities on acting and directing will be engaged as special presenters at the workshops.
