In Sophia's own words: Theater is something that I never truly imagined myself becoming involved in. I was always a little shy growing up and whenever it came to social situations I would tend to try and avoid them. Then one summer when I was with my grandma she decided it would be fun for me to sign up for a two-week theater group. So of course I went along with it and went to the theater group. I was so nervous when I first got there, especially because I was from out of state. On the first day, we did acting and singing drills, which was a lot more fun than I thought. I never really sang outside of the car with my mom before, so singing in a large setting was more thrilling than ever expected. Then the second day was auditions, and I knew I really wanted to be one of the town's girls because we had lots of singing and a lot of time on stage. So I went into the audition and sure enough, I got the role of one of the town's girls. From there the next two weeks zoomed by and then opening night. I remembered being so nervous, this was my first time ever performing for an audience and I had no clue what to expect. All of the older kids were walking backstage with so much confidence, but I still couldn't shake the feeling of everything going wrong. That's when the director came up to me and said, just go out there and have fun. It was simple advice but it was so effective. The first act flew by, and at intermission, I had my costume change, which was very important to me at the time, because I thought I was the coolest for changing clothes. Then act two goes on without any problems and all I can think of the whole time is how amazing it was to be on stage performing. From that moment on I knew I had to be onstage. All throughout middle school, I did the musicals, but when I got to the high school I gave being backstage a try and fell in love with that as well. Every time I walk into a theater I always get the wow feeling. I love every small detail about theater, from the sets to the costumes, to the lines being said. I love the stories and magic that can be created with just a few beautiful souls. Now looking back on how I got into theater I truly thank my grandma for signing me up for that summer program. Though she is no longer here I know that every time I walk on stage she sees me perform, and that she is smiling and proud of me. I truly would have never started without her, and I thank her so much for getting me into something I love. If I had not found theater I would not have made some of my closest friends, along with finding a passion I hope to continue in the future
