Joseph P. Scholz 1926 - 2008
SCHOLZ, Joseph P., 82, of Richmond, formerly of Westwood, Mass., died March 20, 2008 at home. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; his sons, Lawrence (Patricia) of Stoughton, Mass., Eric (Cheryl) of Milford, Ohio, Timothy (Nancy) of Rochester, Mass. and Christopher (Susan) of Richmond; and his daughter, Kathleen (Samuel Jaffe) of State College, Pa.; as well as 11 grandchildren. His sisters, Maria MacMunn and Peg Lewan; and a brother, Charles, all of New Jersey, survive as well.
Joe served in the Air Force during World War II as a B-24 gunner. Later in life, he served as a volunteer at the Virginia Aviation Museum. He was involved in the Footlighters Community Theater in Massachusetts for 25 years, where he directed and acted in numerous plays and musicals. His first and favorite role was as Otto Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank. He also appeared as the Minstrel in Once Upon a Mattress. He served as the Footlighters President for several years and was familiar to patrons from his curtain speeches introducing the shows. Most recently, he directed St. Edward's production of Fiddler on the Roof. He also sang with St. Edward's Church choir.
He became involved in the Boy Scouts as a young man and was Scoutmaster for all four of his sons. A memorial Mass will be conducted March 29, 2008 at 12 noon, at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Richmond. The family has suggested that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to the American Institute for Cancer Research (www.aicr.org). Joe will be remembered for the smiles and hugs he had for everyone he met, and will be missed greatly. He is singing in God's choir now.
